“Jerry, get back over here ASAP. And see if you can get Bob on the radio.”
Miller could barely here Candy yelling into her cellphone. She had one finger jammed into her ear trying to block out the sounds of the fire trucks. It had
taken twenty minutes to get through to the fire station. When they finally got there Miller waved them into position. At the moment the firemen were busy
spraying a column of water into the bombed out remains of the police station.
Miller jammed a finger into his own ear and tried the Chief’s number again. “Come on, answer. Of all the days to go fishing.”
“You have reached the voice mailbox of..”
“Damn it” he mumbled as he ended the call.
“Charlie!” he heard Candy cry out.
He spun around at the sound of her voice. Her eyes were wide and she was thrusting her cellphone in his direction. He looked at it blankly for a second
before taking it.
“Sergeant Miller.”
“Sergeant, this is Susie over at the hospital” came a flustered response. “I’m Candy’s sister. We just had a car explode in the parking lot. I think it was Mary’s!”
He could hear Susie crying on her end. “Listen to me Susie. It’s going to be ok. I’m going to get a fire truck there right away. I’ll be there in ten minutes. You just hang tight and wait for me. Ok?”
“Ok” she whimpered in reply.
He hung up the phone and handed it back to Candy.
“I’ve got to get over to the hospital. I’ve left three messages for the chief. When Jerry and Bob get back
put em to work.”
“Ok, the question is how are you going to get there?”
He looked over at his flaming squad car and sighed. He looked back to see her smirking and holding out her keys. He sighed again and took them from her.
